Prior to World War I, a shake might be made with brandy, gin, or another ardent spirit. Fans of a Ramos Gin Fizz , batidos , or caffe shakerato , a caf specialty of shaken espresso and cold milk, know this effect. Cocktail Bill Boothby, for example, described a Rum Shake in his 1891 drinks manual The American Bar-Tender.

Foubert, a farmer, and wine merchant in the Charente-Maritime department of southwest France, initiated her palate with brandy distilled from plums from his orchard. Despite her initial distaste her grandfather introduced her to another offering—an amber liquid he called Armagnac. To her surprise, she found it immensely appealing.
