Drink of the Week: Aviation American Gin

Imbibe Magazine

When Aviation American Gin first hit shelves in 2006, it was something of a novel spirit. Unlike the juniper-forward London dry gins that had long dominated the market, Aviation brought other botanicals to the forefront, with its prominent citrus, spice, and floral notes. Marketed as American-style gin, the new spirit sparked a sea change among domestic craft distillers, who began to experiment more and more with distillations representing their home terroir.

Review: Jura American Rye Cask 14 Years Old

Drinkhacker

Smell that whisky: Sherry, amirite? As a matter of fact, no: This exciting new release from Jura is a 14 year old that is aged in a combination of American bourbon and rye whiskey casks — the latter being a twist that is a rarity in Scotland. The nose immediately threw me for a loop: Orange and lemon peel, then black tea, incense, and heavily floral perfumes.

One Last Negroni

Cocktails with Suderman

Negronis are forever. But Negroni Week ? Well, it’s almost over. We’re going to close out with one of my favorite lesser-known Negroni riffs. When you think about Negroni variations, you probably think about Negroni-class drinks that swap out the gin for a different base spirit. There’s the Boulevardier (a Negroni with whiskey), the Kingston Negroni (a Negroni with dark, high-proof Jamaican rum), and the Mezcal Negroni (a Negroni with, you guessed it, mezcal).

The 30 Best Rums for 2024

VinePair

As much as any other spirit, it’s safe to say there’s a style of rum for everyone. Nations across the globe have made it for centuries, with regions and producers offering different interpretations via distinct base ingredients — fresh cane juice, cane syrup, and molasses — as well as varied fermentation and distillation techniques. Expressions arrive unaged and uncut; matured but with color later stripped away; or following decades in casks old and new.

They say a rising tide lifts all boats, but Scotch is proving to be a struggling outlier in the current whiskey boom. There’s a glut of single malts, and while some brands are trying to point to Scotch’s ability to be used in cocktails, it just isn’t working. Positioning Scotch as a mixing spirit could even damage its long-held reputation as a luxury product.
