Fans of a Ramos Gin Fizz , batidos , or caffe shakerato , a caf specialty of shaken espresso and cold milk, know this effect. Cocktail Bill Boothby, for example, described a Rum Shake in his 1891 drinks manual The American Bar-Tender.
