It’s been a year (January 2024) since Plantation Rum formally rebranded as Planteray as a move to get away from the slavery connotations of its original name. Mister Fogg is a particularly fun rum to review, because we got to see it in its early stages of vatting in the flesh during our visit to Maison Ferrand in Cognac a few years ago.
The two together with the a new book that is sure to steal the attention of lovers of libations: Behind Bars: True Crime Stories of Whiskey Heists, Beer Bandits, and Fake Million-Dollar Wines. It’s the follow-up to his first book released in July 2023, Cask Strength: The Story of the Barrel, the Secret Ingredient in Your Drink.
The cocktail combines equal parts vodka, rum, tequila, gin, and triple sec ironically containing almost every ingredient in the book besides tea. The recipe calls for light rum, dark rum, and overproof rum, not to mention apricot brandy and grenadine. Either way, the drink is truly a powerhouse of booze.

A popular and once-ubiquitous Jamaican rum has become mysteriously scarce this year. Wray & Nephew Overproof is practically synonymous with overproof rum. It’s by far one of Jamaica’s most popular rums, and can be found behind most bars in the U.S. But then I realized, oh, man, it’s really tough to find a bottle.
Beyond being a litmus test for balance, the drink only contains three ingredients: light rum , sugar, and lime juice. For consistency, we used VinePair’s house Daiquiri spec: a standard 1:1 simple syrup, Probitas White Blended Rum , one of the many forms of lime juice (or lime juice alternatives), and Kold Draft ice for each drink.
So went spirits critic Robert Whitley’s 2002 review of Ciclón, a just-released Barcardí product that combined the brand’s Gold Rum with “blue agave” tequila and a “hint” of natural lime juice. The spirits giant’s own motto was a little more blunt: “90% rum, 10% tequila, 100% un-be-lievable!” “ It’s new, it’s hip, it’s a mere $14. ”
