And while this may be an initial introduction to shochu (and its ancestor, awamori) for many American drinkers, in Japan, the spirit has long been a favorite. “Shochu and awamori outsell sake in Japan,” says Stephen Lyman, who, along with business partner Christopher Pelligrini, co-hosts the Japan Distilled podcast , and sources bottles and imports shochu though their company, Honkaku Spirits.

The World Beer Cup awards were announced Wednesday night and I’m always thrilled when the most competitive award goes to a Midwestern brewery — even more so when it’s one of my favorites in Chicago. Old Irving Brewery’s Beezer beat out 325 other beers to earn the Gold Medal for Juicy/Hazy IPA. Between this award and their GABF Gold, Beezer is the beer that all other hazies are being judged by at this point.

Edrington-owned Glenrothes Distillery in Speyside is going premium. If you visit The Glenrothes website you will be greeted by a stunning video of the new Philos in action. In addition to this, the brand’s core range now consists only of whiskies aged over 18 years. Namely, an 18 year old, a 25 year old, and a 42 year old. Given that Glenrothes is, as mentioned above, owned by the same company that ‘premiumized’ The Macallan, it is fairly safe to say that this venture should prove fruitful.
