A new territory has been conquered in the ongoing creativity arms race between the worlds top bars: the ice cube. Over the years, the search for garnish innovations inspired inventions like the classic cocktail pick, the cringey millennial-era tiny clothespin, or, more recently, the little spoon that can hold a small serving of caviar. Today, an increasing number of bar pros are instead looking to the clear rock in the middle of the glass, not just as a tool for temperature control and dilution,
Gen Z is drinking less alcohol than previous generations. That much, we know. But the why behind this trend is more nuanced than the usual headlines about health consciousness and sober curiosity suggest. A 2023 Gallup survey found that just 62% of adults under 35 say they drink alcohol, down ten points from two decades earlier. And while many are quick to attribute this shift to a newfound obsession with wellness, the real picture is more complicated.
Living in suburban Collierville, Tennessee, some 30 minutes southeast of Memphis, Maggie Emerson was used to traveling for locally brewed beer. Memphis and greater Shelby County counted more than 15 breweries, but there wasnt one with a taproom within a 20-to 30-minute drive, says Emerson, a married mom of two kids. The city market was well served with breweries, but Collierville is the far outskirts of our county.

After a busy week, here’s some positive Chicagoland beer news from the past few days! A new brand called Brutalist Brewing - aka “ your favorite brewery’s favorite brewers ” - came out of the box with a pretty impressive opening announcement for their first beers being released from Pilot Project. Love the attitude. This team wasn’t on my radar at all until a couple of weeks ago and now I’m really looking forward to seeing what they’ve got.
Popularity does not always equal personal satisfaction in the bourbon world. Its the risk enthusiasts take when they open a critically acclaimed or tater-approved bottle for the first time. That initial encounter with the juice may leave them cold or indifferent, leaving them to wonder why the bottle garnered so much hype. This lackluster experience isnt limited to bottles sometimes, a drinker may not click with a specific whiskey style or a certain production technique.

Flauer Alassio 2025 is a unique event, exploring edible flowers, wild herbs, food sustainability and mixology. And a whole lot more. We came to Flaurer Alassio with high expectations. Three days to explore the world of edible flowers in itself was particularly appealing. Not that they are particularly new on the culinary dishes being served up in the world’s best restaurants.
In drinks, as in all things, it’s good to have your expectations or preconceptions completely blown out of the water from time to time. My first uttered words upon tasting the Artesanal Arroqueo agave distillate from Paquera are not exactly suitable for print, but the gist was “Wow.” The world of mezcal is fascinating for a myriad of reasons, from its lengthy cultural history to its many unique production methods.

Before the establishment of the American Viticultural Area (AVA) system, winemaking in the United States was a bit like the Wild West. There was the challenge of cultivating European grape vines in American soil, not to mention phylloxera to contend with. Then there was the fact that, sometimes, winemakers didnt even know what grapes they were actually working with as was the case with Valdigui, a little-known grape native to Frances Languedoc-Roussillon region.

The Central Valley, one of the countrys most commercially established wine regions, encompasses several subregions with distinct terroirs and winemaking identities. Within this stretch lies the Maipo Valley, which many consider to be the birthplace of Chiles modern wine industry.

Sometimes an evening calls for a drink with a little extra oomph. Rather than ordering a classic like a Gin & Tonic or Old Fashioned and asking the bartender to make it strong , there are a few particularly powerful cocktails that pack a punch all on their own. Makeshift drinks of house party fame like jungle juice (or even Gen Zs beloved Borg ) might take the cake in terms of nuclear alcohol content, but there are better, more balanced options than mixing vodka with Crystal Lite in a milk
Founded in 1887 in Scotland’s Speyside region, Glenfiddich stands as one of whisky’s most pioneering distilleries. As the first single malt actively marketed outside Scotland in the 1960s, it helped transform Scotch from a local treasure to a global phenomenon, becoming either the #1 or #2 best-selling single malt worldwide. At the heart of Glenfiddich’s appeal lies its core age-statement range: the approachable 12-year “Original Twelve,” the innovative 15-year R

Several years into Espresso Martini-mania , what appeared to be a trend at first is proving to be a new staple in cocktail bars across the globe. The wines of Sicily are well known, from the Nero dAvolas and Etna Rossos and Biancos , to the white Grillos and Catarrattos.
